HOW
CAN YOU BENEFIT FROM YOGA?
The correct practice and understanding
of yoga can help people of all ages and from all walks of life.
It promotes health by encouraging the free flow of life force within
the body and therefore has both general and specific applications.
1. It maintains fitness and
flexibility and promotes a sense of well-being. By building up resistance
to disease it is also preventive.
2. Concentration is improved,
awareness heightened and intuition strengthened It brings greater
clarity of mind, and cultivates a sense of harmony with life.
3. Yoga helps us to take charge
of our own energy, to become masters of life rather than victims
of circumstance. While acknowledging and accepting the difficulties
it looks for the positive in what we are experiencing and therefore
has the possibility of transforming our lives. Our thoughts influence
the activities in the body and our experiences of life. By tuning
into our calm and peaceful centre and looking at something in a
different way, we are able to find the solution we need.
4. It is extremely effective
in relieving the stresses of modern day living.
5. As well as its general and
preventive nature, yoga is therapeutic and healing:
a. The integration of mind,
body and emotions strengthens the immune system and therefore
the bodys own self-healing powers and helps to restore the
proper functioning of the various bodily systems. Central to this
process is the restoration of the natural breath building
up our life force by the correct use of the diaphragm.
b. Medical research has shown
that it is most effective for many ailments and it offers a complementary
approach to the treatment of disease. Essentially it is a self
help therapy giving the person a creative and active role in their
own healing process.
c. The practice of yoga can
be very empowering for those with chronic disorders and disabilities.
It appreciably improves the physical condition and quality of
life, generating positive attitudes and bringing peace of mind.
It is a great aid in the management of chronic conditions.
d. Yoga considers the whole
person and what they are experiencing. Because of its holistic
nature a wide variety of conditions can be helped. It alleviates
symptoms and gets to the cause of the problem. We need to begin
where we are, step by step working towards peace, and fulfillment.
