WHAT IS CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY?

Craniosacral therapy was founded by Dr William Sutherland, an American osteopath at the beginning of the twentieth century.

He discovered the existence of a subtle rhythmic movement in the tissues and fluids at the core of the body which he called the Primary Respiratory Impulse. These rhythmic motions are uniquely expressed in each person and can be felt in all the structures of the craniosacral system – the brain, spinal cord, cerebrospinal fluid, meninges, cranial bones, vertebra, pelvis and sacrum as well as the organs and tissues of the body.

Dr Sutherland realised that this motion is produced by an Intelligent and organising force which he called the Breath of Life and the cerebrospinal fluid plays a major role in expressing and distributing the Breath of Life through all the cells of the body. All life is motion so where there is no motion or movement is restricted, disease or dysfunction arises.

Essentially the craniosacral therapist works with the Intelligence and wisdom in the body, listening to how the Breath of Life expresses itself in the individual and facilitating its expression, so that health and movement can be restored.

How can craniosacral therapy help you?

Because of its holistic nature, craniosacral therapy can help in almost every condition. It is a deeply relaxing treatment, raises vitality and supports the body’s own self-healing process.

  • It takes into account all aspects of a person’s being considering the many factors which can contribute to the symptoms and it is especially effective in getting to the underlying cause of the problem.
  • It is suitable for all ages from the newborn to the elderly and in acute or painful conditions.
  • Craniosacral therapy can help many persistent, chronic or recurrent conditions which may not have responded to other forms of treatment.
  • It is particularly effective in the treatment of trauma including birth trauma and in the after effects of an accident, operation or serious illness.
  • It aids personal growth giving us insight into any difficulty we may be experiencing.

The following are some of the many conditions that can benefit from craniosacral treatment:

allergies, anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back pain, birth trauma, breathing disorders, bronchitis, depression, digestive disorders, ear problems, fatigue, frozen shoulder, headache, head injuries, high blood pressure, hyperactivity, insomnia, joint disorders, lack of energy, migraine, neck problems, period pain, post-operative effects, sciatica scoliosis, sinusitis, stress, sports injuries, tension, TMJ problems, whiplash injury
